With the sunny weather bringing out a glimpse of Spring, it’s time to think about how we can prepare for the warmer weather and give our cars some much-needed TLC after a cold Winter.
1. Check Your Tyre Pressure
Tyre pressure decreases with cold temperatures, meaning that you may have filled your tyres with more air in the Winter months. Consequently when it gets warmer in Spring, your tyre pressure may increase to more than your optimum level. It is a good idea to check your tyre pressure as soon as the weather starts to get warmer in order to prevent any irreversible damage.
2. Check Your Oil & Levels
It is also important to make sure your car is in tip top condition and levels are replenished. Top up oil, brake fluid, coolant and screen wash before Spring commences – any garage or Halfords will do this for you if you don’t know how.
3. Make Sure Your Wipers Are Fresh
Cold weather and road conditions affect your wipers significantly in Winter as opposed to the warmer months. Mud, road grit and ice on your windscreen may have caused small tears in your wiper blades, resulting in ineffective use in the rain or other conditions. Check the condition of your wiper blades and replace them if need be. This can again be done at Halfords or any garage.
4. Get a Spare Car Key
The Spring and Summer months can be especially daunting if you are only relying on one car key. Some car models automatically lock even with the keys in the car after a certain amount of time. You don’t want to be caught out in the warm weather in case your pets or children get locked in the car. Older car keys can also be susceptible to wear and tear over time, breaking at the most inconvenient of times. In the event that this happens, carrying a spare car key will get you out of trouble so you can get on with your day.

5. Give Your Car a Spring Clean
The mud and grit on the roads would have taken the sparkle out of your pride and joy, so give your car a much-needed wash and wax as Spring commences. It’s especially important to clear any grit and mud from wheel arches to avoid build up.
Don’t forget about the inside! Clear out any Winter coats, rubbish, and empty water bottles that may be lying around in your car. Hoover up dust, hair, crumbs and any other evidence so your car is as good as new. Windscreens in particular need a thorough clean inside and out. In warm weather, the vinyl and plastics in your car can produce a gas that produces a layer of waxy film on the inside of your windscreen, which reduces visibility. Invest in a window cleaner and clean the windscreen until the waxy layer is removed.
